A BOLD MOVE ON THE NATE BERKUS SHOW TODAY

20 Sep

Today on The Nate Berkus Show, I team up with Nate to help a native New Yorker get out from under 20 years of clutter.  And like most abodes in the city that never sleeps, the space was modest in size.  Moving things around in one room only left a bigger mess in another.  A true Tetris puzzle of clutter.

In a bold move, Nate and I decided to move all of Laurie’s stuff out of her place making all of her clutter instantly more manageable.  This way, Laurie could take inventory of everything she had in order to pare down her stuff before we moved it back in.

But before Nate and I could create a beautifully designed, functional space, we first had to address Laurie’s compulsion to buy the things she didn’t need and get her to focus on the things that were actually relevant to her life today.

When you think about all the steps in the moving process, it’s the opportune time to wipe the slate clean deciding if you still need everything you have.  And since being organized has less to do with how a space looks than how effectively it functions, I share four easy steps on the show to help anyone move out to move in.

Now aside from Eddie and I slipping away to Flushing Meadows to watch Serena and Nadal play at the U.S. Open, what I loved most about doing this segment was working along side Nate and his team.

  .

Nate has great hair AND a great head on his shoulders.  I pride myself in putting people first and it became evidently clear that Nate and his team operate the same way.  It made me think about all the people like Laurie who open up their homes and hearts to TV shows like this, completely trusting that they will get the help they need yet ultimately at the mercy of the show’s intentions and its experts.

Collaborating with Nate reminded me of how fortunate I am to work with people who genuinely want to do right by people by surprising them with what they never thought possible.

To witness the magic first-hand, check out The Nate Berkus Show today, Sept. 20th.  If you miss it, click here to watch it on-line.

Until next time…

Mark… unlike most designers you are much less self absorbed about ‘your’ design and much more sensitive toward the human design you sense in the individuals you work with… I really like that and more impressive you regularly design a wonderful living space that has their own little Fung Shui … Good to see you on a new roll with your unique sensitivity & style. 242 days ago

  • Its great to see these 2 designers pair up! I love how Mark lets us in on just a little bit of his life, then surprises his fans with fun news like this. This is why we love Mark so much!! I trust, in due time, Mark will be hosting his own show. ;)

Mark, you and the Clean House crew are the reason I went from clutter to creative. It’s the most inspirational show I have watched so far and yes it eventually changed my entire lifestyle forever. Thank you Mark and frankly I need you back on tv to continue to teach me all your design tricks that you make look so easy, even though its very hard work! 230 days ago

is the entire show on the internet anywhere? I saw a repeat yesterday 3-6-12 and would love to show my clutterbound sister who wants to see this neat episode, and decluttering *is* possible :)
